AP Mitchell were contracted by Equans on behalf of Cheshire West and Chester Council to undertake an ASHP installation project at Wyvern House, the Head Quarters for West Cheshire Council, and also home to the West Cheshire division of Equans. These iconic offices were brought up to grade in terms of efficiency and comfort with this mechanical and electrical project. Our work at this site involved the following:

Mains distribution equipment;

A new 400A TP+N supply to a Schneider Section panel in the plantroom has been installed, fed via a switched fused isolator in the substation as shown on the as installed drawings. The air source heat pump is fed from this newly installed electrical supply and can be isolated locally on the heat pump itself.

Cable and containment;

Cable route indicated on as built drawings, a trench 700mm deep has been excavated from the substation located in the car park leading to the plantroom door left hand side cable chamber. Ladder rack has been installed within the ASHP compound.

BMS / Control wiring ;

The existing BMS panel located in the plantroom has been modified to accommodate the new air source heat pump.

Mechanical Installation

A Daikin 250kw ASHP has been supplied and installed in a new compound outside the boiler room. This has been piped as per the as installed drawings into a 1000 litre buffer vessel and then from the vessel direct into the existing low loss header with a circulation pump as a shunt.

The building Boilers LPHW supply temperature has been dropped to 55 degs flow to match the ASHP temperature flow.

Groundworks/Civil

A new compound consisting of a concrete base and 2.3mtr hit & miss fence was formed to enclose the ASHP. The concrete base compiles of 150mm crush and run with a further 150mm of concrete using 2 separate layers of steel bars, a drainage channel was formed down the centre of the concrete base to remove any condensate water which was produced by the ASHP itself this water runs into a gravel trap at one end of the base. A new flagged path was also installed from the existing entrance pathway to the gates of the ASHP compound using 600x600 paving slabs.

Cables were installed between the ASHP compound, and the electrical substation located on the perimeter of the car park, where possible the trenches were kept to 700mm however due to several existing services within the area this wasn’t always possible. Cables have been buried directly into the ground and then covered with sand and yellow electrical hazard tape.
